Open end or closed end, does it matter for strength? No difference in clamping strength at proper torque. The choice is about stud length and appearance.

Do open end nuts rust on the exposed stud? The exposed tip can surface-rust in snow-belt states; it is cosmetic and cleans up with a wire brush at rotation. Keep lubricants and anti-seize off wheel stud threads, since torque specs assume clean, dry threads.

Are these right for wheel adapters? Often yes: adapter studs sometimes sit long, and open end nuts accommodate them. Check your adapter's stud length against the nut's bore depth.
